DES MOINES, Iowa — So far this year, five people have died in motorcycle-related accidents on Iowa’s roadways.
Sgt. Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department said that two main factors contribute to accidents.
“What we see is that there are some direct relation to driver behavior, whether it’s a person in a vehicle not being attentive to what they’re doing or a motorcycle driving carelessly or recklessly. Those two things always seem to be a component to these crashes,” Parizek said.
Iowa lawmakers target hemp businesses with new legislationFor motorcyclists safety is a big concern. Local dealerships like Big Barn Harley-Davidson have courses for beginners to get them accustomed to road safety.
Rick Zimney, a Riding Academy Manager at Big Barn Harley-Davidson, said the safety course helps new riders gain confidence.
“It’s definitely a draw. It gives them the confidence, it gives them the courage. You know, I think they feel empowered and they feel like they can do this once they’ve gone through a class like this, a granite training should always continue. You should always never feel like you’re the expert, always feel like you’re the student, and you should refresh your skills every year,” Zimney said.
