Sometimes, celebrities and royals can really surprise you. As in, you expect one thing from them, and then do a totally different thing. That just happened with Queen Letizia of Spain’s recent outfit that made me do a double take. It was low-key! It was edgy in the best way! It featured so many big 2023 trends

Queen Letizia is known for her ultra-refined style (think: dresses and heels and formal pants suits), so seeing her in this look was certainly a jaw-drop-type-of-moment. That said, I’m racing to recreate her three-piece look for my upcoming travels to Paris because it’s so chic but so easy to wear, and that’s exactly what I love in an outfit.

The royal was photographed attending the closing of the 16th International Seminar of Language and Journalism wearing — wait for it — baggy, checkered trousers that were in line with the big pants trend of 2023. She styled the pants with a fitted back turtleneck, a no-brainer staple piece for fall and winter (and beyond, too). The finishing touch was a leather trench coat that added an element of edge, but the piece that really took her look to a new level of cool were those chunky, lug sole loafers that prove the footwear style is bigger and better than ever, literally.

Loafers have been a celeb-favorite for a while now, but in time, the refined silhouette got chunkier and more daring, making way for the lug sole loafer that has an exaggerated, clunky-looking sole. Celebs like Hailey Bieber, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Garner, and Jane Fonda have all worn the style — and on multiple occasions, at that. Clearly, this range of stars shows the chunky loafer is also an ageless shoe trend that everyone can and should wear, no matter which generation you’re from. The style is there, but what about the practicality? It’s also there.

The chunky loafer is also ideal for this time of year because of that sole. We all know that come fall and winter, a threaded bottom is ideal for trudging through anything the weather throws your way. Plus, the thick base also elevates (aka, lifts you up), so even a little bit of snowfall won’t do any damage. And, before you say, “But loafers are too cold to wear in the winter,” I beg to differ and suggest throwing on some cashmere socks for a cute, cozy touch.

Ready to clunk around town? I am. Shop some more of the lug sole loafers I'm eyeing thanks to Queen Letizia’s latest look from Everlane, Nine West, and Madewell.
